About Undertone

Name the challenge. Undertone meets it with the words that understand it — and remembers the pattern each time you come back.

What is Undertone?

Undertone is a reflection journal. You write down a challenge — a few sentences, no need to name the feeling first — and Undertone reads for the psychodynamic structure underneath it: not just what you're feeling, but the shape of what's driving it. In response, it serves a single quote drawn from a curated corpus of literature and philosophy, matched to that structure rather than to keywords.

The free version gives every new entry a moment to land, and gives new users a small number of full interpretations up front. The paid Depth tier unlocks the full psychodynamic reading on every entry, your complete journal history, and longitudinal pattern reflection — what recurs across your entries over time, and what it might share underneath.

Created by

Undertone was created by Dan Gardner, MD, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst (Distinguished Life Fellow, American Psychiatric Association), and is produced by ExpertFocus, LLC.

The approach

Every entry is read by a psychodynamically-informed classifier that names the underlying affect at work — guilt, ambivalence, overresponsibility, envy, and the rest of a fixed taxonomy — rather than the surface emotion word. That reading is used to select from a hand-curated, tagged corpus of quotes; nothing is generated to sound relevant after the fact. Only the interpretive layer — the Depth reading, and the free tier's limited first tastes of it — is generated, and it's written to offer recognition, not instruction: it names what might be underneath what you wrote, and stops there.

A note on privacy

What you write is yours. Entries and the readings generated from them aren't reviewed by staff and aren't used to train or fine-tune any AI model. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.

Reflective, not clinical

Undertone is a reflective tool, not therapy, counseling, or a diagnostic service. It doesn't replace care from a licensed professional, and it isn't built to handle a crisis — see the Disclaimer for what to do if that's where you are right now.
